Basaglar (insulin glargine) is a long-acting recombinant human insulin analogue designed to provide steady, 24-hour blood sugar control for adults and children with type 1 diabetes and adults with type 2 diabetes. This "basal" insulin is formulated at a concentration of 100 units/mL and is typically administered as a single daily subcutaneous injection at the same time each day. Unlike rapid-acting insulins that address immediate mealtime glucose spikes, Basaglar works gradually to mimic the natural background insulin secretion of a healthy pancreas.

The medication functions by facilitating the uptake of sugar into muscle and fat cells from the bloodstream while simultaneously inhibiting the liver's production of glucose. This dual mechanism helps maintain stable blood glucose levels between meals and throughout the night, reducing the risk of long-term diabetes complications such as kidney damage, nerve disease, and vision loss. Because it lacks a pronounced peak, it provides a consistent effect for up to 24 hours or more with one dose.

The 3ml cartridge is designed specifically for use in reusable injection devices, such as Eli Lilly’s HumaPen Savvio or HumaPen Luxura, and should not be used with other pens as dosing accuracy has only been established with these specific models.
